Efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19 have included public space closures, mask usage, and quarantining. Studies regarding the impact of these measures on the psychosocial and behavioral health outcomes of the workforce have focused frequently on healthcare employees. To expand the literature base, we deployed a one-year longitudinal survey among mostly non-healthcare employees assessing changes in select psychosocial outcomes, health behaviors, and COVID-19-related transmission prevention behaviors and perceptions. We deployed the CAPTURE baseline survey across eight companies from November 20, 2020-February 8, 2021. The baseline survey included questions on psychosocial outcomes, health behaviors, and COVID-19 transmission prevention behaviors, with several questions containing a retrospective component to cover the time period prior to the pandemic. Additional questions on vaccination status and social support were subsequently added, and the updated survey deployed to the same baseline participants at three, six, and 12 months after baseline survey deployment. We analyzed data descriptively and performed Friedman’s and subsequent Wilcoxon-signed rank tests, as appropriate, to compare data within and between time points. A total of 3607, 1788, 1545, and 1687 employees completed the baseline, 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month CAPTURE surveys, respectively, with 816 employees completing all four time points. Employees reported higher stress, anxiety, fatigue, and feelings of being unsafe across all time points compared to pre-pandemic. Time spent sleeping increased initially but returned to pre-pandemic levels at follow-up. Lower rates of physical activity and higher rates of non-work screen time and alcohol consumption relative to pre-pandemic were also reported. Over 90% of employees perceived wearing a mask, physical distancing, and receiving the COVID-19 vaccine as ‘moderately’ or ‘very important’ in preventing the spread of COVID-19 across all time points. Relative to pre-pandemic, poorer psychosocial outcomes and worsened health behaviors were observed across all time points, with values worse at the baseline and 12-month time points when COVID-19 surges were highest. While COVID-19 prevention behaviors were consistently deemed to be important by employees, the psychosocial outcome and health behavior data suggest the potential for harmful long-term effects of the pandemic on the well-being of non-healthcare employees.

<p>Habitual physical activity (PA) impacts the plasma proteome and reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D). Using a large-scale proteome-wide approach in Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study participants, we aimed to identify plasma proteins associated with PA and determine which of these may be causally related to lower T2D risk. PA was associated with 92 plasma proteins in discovery (p&amp;lt;1.01x10−5), and 40 remained significant in replication (p&amp;lt;5.43x10−4). Eighteen of these proteins were independently associated with incident T2D (p&amp;lt;1.25x10−3) including neuronal growth regulator 1 (NeGR1) (HR per SD: 0.85; p-value=7.5x10−11). Two-sample Mendelian randomization inverse variance weighted analysis indicated that higher NeGR1 reduces T2D risk (OR per SD: 0.92; p=0.03) and was consistent with MR-Egger, weighted median, and weighted mode sensitivity analyses. A stronger association was observed for the single cis-acting NeGR1 genetic variant (OR per SD: 0.80; p=6.3x10−5). Coupled with previous evidence that low circulating NeGR1 levels promote adiposity, its association with PA and potential causal role in T2D shown here suggest that NeGR1 may link PA exposure with metabolic outcomes. Further research is warranted to confirm our findings and examine the interplay of PA, NeGR1, adiposity, and metabolic health.</p>

U.S. Using a parallel convergent mixed methods approach, we compared minor, moderate, and extreme U.S. speeder types (N = 293) to gain a better understanding of why U.S. drivers speed to the degree that they do. An online survey collected quantitative data on self-reported characteristics, speeding behaviors, and roadway behaviors after key events (collisions, speeding tickets) and given passenger presence. Analysis of qualitative data from participants explaining their roadway behaviors and beliefs identified several speeding-related themes. Themes shared to the same extent by all speeder types include not typically citing speeding a cause of a collision and good drivers not needing to change speeding behaviors (i.e., perceived mastery). However, the permanence and extent of speed reductions after key events and with passengers did vary by speeder type, with minor speeders making more extensive and permanent changes. Qualitative and quantitative data both underscore the perception that speeding is not a high priority threat to roadway safety. Findings suggest continued research using conservative and nuanced definitions of speeding is warranted to understand how similar perceptions result in a spectrum of speeding behaviors.

Speeding has consistently contributed to a high number of motor vehicle crashes and subsequent injuries and deaths in the U.S. Identifying types of drivers related to speeding behaviour may help target interventions to reduce speeding. Typology of U.S. driver speeders have examined very specifically speeding behaviours and speeding-related attitudes. This exploratory work used latent class analysis (LCA) to examine how other driving behaviours and attitudes cluster around speeding behaviours to determine speeder typologies, which may lend a more holistic perspective to speeder types. Predicted class assignments were evaluated for associations with demographic and personality factors. The LCA resulted in four driver typologies, which we labelled: Externally Motivated (40.7%), Non-Reactors (26.2%), Perceived Invulnerable (24.3%), and Perceived Vulnerable (8.9%). The Externally Motivated and Non-Reactors typologies had the highest probability of reporting extreme speeding. The Externally Motivated may be intervened upon with messaging about reducing risks crashes and injuring passengers, while the Perceived Vulnerable class already exhibit several risk-averse behaviours that self-limits their speeding behaviour. Class placement was associated with age, self-reported speeding frequency, receipt of speeding violations. The resulting U.S. driver typologies advances the literature by demonstrating that non-speeding driver behaviours and attitudes cluster with speeding behaviours, which altogether can inform more nuanced and effective anti-speeding campaigns.

<p> <bold>Background</bold> : This study tested for differences in personal, social, and environmental correlates of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) across ethnicity/race in male and female adolescents. <bold>Methods</bold> : Self-reported MVPA and 47 potential correlates of MVPA were measured in an ethnically/racially diverse cross-sectional sample of adolescents, in Minnesota, who participated in EAT-2010 (Eating and Activity in Teens). Interactions of potential correlates with ethnicity/race on MVPA were tested in linear hierarchical regression models in boys and girls. <bold>Results</bold> : Boys reported 1.7 more weekly hours of MVPA than girls. White adolescents reported 1.1 to 2.1 more weekly hours of MVPA than nonwhite adolescents. Among girls, neighborhood road connectivity was negatively correlated with MVPA among Hispanic and Asian participants. Among boys, sports participation was positively correlated with MVPA among all ethnicities/races, except Asians. Home media equipment was positively correlated with MVPA among Hispanic boys, but negatively correlated among white boys. <bold>Conclusions</bold> : A few correlates of physical activity among adolescents differed intersectionally by ethnicity/race and sex. Sports participation and home media equipment may have differing impacts on physical activity across ethnicities and races in boys, whereas neighborhood features like road connectivity may have differing impacts on physical activity across ethnicities and races in girls. </p>

The fit of measured variables into a social-ecological model of correlates of physical activity is rarely tested. In this study, we examined the factor structure of correlates of moderate/vigorous physical activity (MVPA) within a hypothesized social-ecological model. Methods: We measured 46 possible personal, social and environmental correlates of MVPA in 2779 adolescents participating in the Project EAT-2010 study. Confirmatory (CFA) and exploratory factor analyses (EFA) were used to determine the factor structure. Associations of factor scores with self-reported MVPA were calculated with linear regression. Results: A 6-factor CFA model did not show adequate fit. Eight factors were identified using EFA (Root Mean Square Error [RMSEA] 90% CI: 0.053 to 0.055; CFI = 0.82). A factor representing the mix of personal and social correlates showed the strongest association with MVPA. Conclusions: The 8-factor model supports independent clustering of possible environmental correlates of MVPA, but indicates that social and personal correlates may not cluster independently. The factor most strongly correlated with MVPA represented a mix of personal and social correlates. Future work will be needed to better understand how mechanisms for developing physical activity work within and across levels of the social-ecological framework.

BACKGROUND Interventions to raise population physical activity generally show modest effects; one possible reason is that trends and determinants of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) differ between population subgroups. This study examined differences in trends and determinants of reported MVPA by ethnicity/race and sex in a 15-year longitudinal study. METHODS Participants (n = 2092) in the Project Eating and Activity in Teens and Young Adults study were surveyed on MVPA behavior and potential determinants from adolescence to young adulthood. Generalized estimating equations were used to model age trends in MVPA and associations with determinants. RESULTS Mean MVPA declined by 2.1 hours per week over 15 years of follow-up from adolescence to young adulthood. Asian males reported the lowest levels of MVPA at each age. Nonwhite females reported less MVPA than white females at each age. The association of body mass index (BMI) with MVPA differed by sex and ethnicity/race. Asian males and females showed lower levels of MVPA at both low and high BMI. CONCLUSIONS Interventions to increase MVPA may need to begin earlier among Asian men and nonwhite women than among other groups. Asian adolescents with lower BMI show lower MVPA and may benefit from additional intervention efforts compared with Asian adolescents with normal BMI.

PURPOSE To test the effectiveness of an intervention to increase motivation for physical activity in racially diverse third- through fifth-grade students. DESIGN Natural experiment. SETTING Elementary schools in Minneapolis, Minnesota. PARTICIPANTS Two hundred ninety-one students in 18 Minne-Loppet Ski Program classes and 210 students in 12 control classrooms from the same schools. INTERVENTION The Minne-Loppet Ski Program, an 8-week curriculum in elementary schools that teaches healthy physical activity behaviors through cross-country skiing. MEASURES Pretest and posttest surveys measured self-determination theory outcomes: intrinsic exercise motivation, intrinsic ski motivation, autonomy, competence, and relatedness. ANALYSIS Hierarchical linear regression models tested treatment effects controlled for grade, race, sex, and baseline measures of the outcomes. RESULTS Minne-Loppet program students showed significantly greater motivation to ski (β = 0.95, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.15-1.75) and significantly greater perceived competence (β = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.06-1.50) than students in control classrooms. Treatment effects for general exercise motivation and perceived competence differed by race. African American students in Minne-Loppet classes showed significantly greater general exercise motivation (β = 1.08, 95% CI: 0.03-2.14) and perceived competence (β = 1.95, 95% CI: 0.91-2.99) than African American students in control classes. CONCLUSION The Minne-Loppet program promoted perceived competence and motivation to ski. Future improvements to the Minne-Loppet and similar interventions should aim to build general motivation and provide support needed to better engage all participants.
